ROMA WOMEN EMPOWERMENT REGIONAL PROJECT
Is a three-year project implemented in four countries of the Western Balkans Region focused on strengthening the position of Roma women, through Roma Women organizations (RWOs) active in the region. The project is implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro in the period September 2008 through August 2010.
The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by CARE NWB and its key project partners-local Roma Women Organizations that are as follows:
1. „Better Future“-Tuzla (BiH)
2. „Center for Roma Intitiatives“- Nikšić (Montenegro)
3. „Roma Women Center-Bibija“ -Beograd (Srbia)
4. „ Roma Heart“-Jagodnjak (Baranja, Croatia)
The Development goal of the project:
The position of Roma women in Western Balkan societies strengthened through supporting the efforts of organizations, institutions and Ministries involved in anti-discrimination, empowerment and minority rights promotion campaigns in the target countries.
The purpose of the project:
1. Advocacy position of Roma women’s organizations enhanced,
2. Capacities of the partner organizations to implement projects aimed at empowering Roma women in Western Balkan region built, and
3. Effective regional network that would be instrumental in exchanging the best practice models and policies and raising awareness on status of Roma women in the region established and functional.
4. Awareness of specific target groups and the general public on status of Roma women, as well as the risks of trafficking the Roma girls are facing, raised.
The added value of the project will be a joint regional response to the issue that is a common for all four countries as well as the replication of best practice models within the region that would lead to improved policies related to discrimination of Roma people and particularly Roma women in the target region. The project is in line with the activities conducted by Stability Pact’s Gender Task Force. Due to the poverty and the status in society, Roma girls are the primary vulnerable target group for trafficking. CARE will use resources of its partner organizations and established Networks in the region that are focused on prevention and combatting trafficking in people, in particular women and girls, to raise awareness among the Roma Women Organizations.
